In the centre of the village of Liopteri, there is one of the most beautiful architecturally speaking churches of Cyprus. It is dedicated to Panagia Eleousa and it is built in the shape of a single aisled Basilica with a dome. It is covered by a gabled and pointed roof.
It is said that it is a 16th century construction, despite the fact that the architecture it follows refers to older periods. It seems to have received transformations and extensions.
On the southern wall, in the early 20th century, a shelter, supported by 4 hexagonal columns having capitals which, along with the side walls forming 7 arches, was added.
The east wall forms a three sided semicircle on which rests the quadrant housing the altar. The belfry was added probably much later than the year the Church was built. It stands in the corner formed by the south and eastern walls and is built on 4 levels. The bell is hung on the third level.
The dome is located east of the center of the church and follows the architecture of the early Christian churches, which wants it to have a low drum, supported by a pair of outer struts, which, along with the dome give the Church its cruciform shape.
The whole church is built with local stone, plastered and painted white.
To reach the church you should leave the intercity road going towards Agia Napa and take the road towards Liopetri straight for 1500 metres. You will see it opposite you.
