Archangel Michael chapel - Kellaki

Chapels in Cyprus - Archangel Michael, Kellaki, Limassol

In the picnic area of Kellaki, that is found on the road from Kellaki to Sanida, a small chapel is found. It is the chapel of Archangel Michael. It is a construction dating from the Byzantine years.

It was stone built, covered with arches with 3 entrances. Unfortunately it has been included in the “monuments” category, resulting to it passing under the control of the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus.

The indifference of the authorities for its conservation, as well as for measure taking for its protection from natural phenomena,  the chapel collapsed. As a result, the only parts saved today are its foundations and parts of its walls. Remains of frescoes can be seen on the remains of walls.

Despite the efforts of the residents, the politicians and the religious authorities of the community, and despite the promises they received from the responsible ministers, the chapel is found in the condition seen on the photographs that have been taken on February 22nd 2015.

It will be a criminal negligence if the chapel is left to disappear from the area where the first Christians built it.
