Chapels in Cyprus - Agia Thekla, Sotira, Famagusta

Added on: by

There is a small chapel dedicated to Agia Thekla between the Municipalities of Agia Napa and Sotira. The two Municipialities declare that the chapel belongs to their periphery and this is not irrelevant with the archaeological wealth that is possibly “hidden” on the shore of Agia Thekla. In terms of religion, it belongs to Sotira, and thus we shall enlist it to it.

East of Sotira, in a location found a few metres from the sea, at the point where the Turkish army landed in 1571 and set foot and conquered Famagusta, the Christians chose to build a Church in honour of Agia Thekla.

There are indications that in the same location back in the ancient years there was a paleochristian basilica. In addition, a few metres from the Church, there is a small cave. Some believe that it is a catacomb and others that it is a tomb. The truth behind it is probably different.

Its shape looks more like a free double cross. This is the form we often find in paleochristian Churches. It is possible that the cave was a small, underground Church and that it was abandoned when the paleochristian basilica was built.

The small chapel is chosen by many couples to celebrate the sacrament of marriage in it. Its beautiful location and its aegean colours create wonderful images when they 'mix' with the sea's waves. On the opposite side, in a small distance, there is a small island that has the Church's name. The island of Agia Thekla.

A hundred metres west, there is a wonderfully organised beach (it has a blue flag) of Agia Thekla. It is a small but very beautiful beach and this is why you will rarely find free places on it.
