The dam of the Maroni river, had to become a dam of diversion, since studies showed that a big dam for the collection of water for irrigation or enrichment purposes could not be built.
At the riverflow, a dam of 5 metres was put in place, and the water that is collected, is guided through pipelines to the big dam of Dipotamos. It is integrated in the water program of “Vasiliko - Pentaschoinos”. It is a program that really solves the water problem for quite a few villages of the area.
The dam is found northwest of the village of Choirokoitia, as you exit the village itself in the direction of Vavla.
A kilometre away from Choirokoitia, you will find the sign that will take you to turn on the right that will guide your way to the dam.
It is built in the valley of the river of Maroni and even though it does not collect a great amount of water, it has created its own small biodiversity.
If you plan to visit it, do not get very close to the riverbed. It may seem safe to approach it, but in reality it is not. Mud that dries up on its surface while it is wet and flimsy on the inside has been accumulated there. This is why you should remain on the banks.
