Rivers in Cyprus - Limnitis, Nicosia

Added on: by

Cyprus is a small island somewhere in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Ever since we have evidence, it was twice abandoned by all its inhabitants, because the heavens were not giving rains. Forests prevent people from discovering the "hidden" sources gushing from the bowels of the mountain, creating rivers that end up in the seas.

Some of these sources are in the western parts of the villages of Kampos and Tsakkistra. Others are still higher up the street from the Monastery of Kykkos to Stavros tis Psokas. All these as well as other areas located in "Mavres Sykies” (Black fig trees) and “Selladi tou Mantiliou" unite their waters and create the river of Limnitis.

The river, in the past millions of years, created a wonderful landscape, covered with tall trees. If traveling from Orkontas to Pyrgos, when you arrive at "Moutti of Kameni" you will begin to descend to the bottom of the ravine of the Limnitis river. The landscape, as you descend, will alter very quickly and will soon turn into a dense forest of Platanus, Alder and other aquatic trees and plants.

While arriving at the height of the riverbed, the landscape will seem unreal. A narrow strip of land of about 30-40 meters, is surrounded by towering cliffs that in some cases is almost vertical. The river flows in shallow, several meters wide riverbed.

The platanus, alder and other trees "bow" over and their branches "bend" to touch the water. All sorts of singing birds, compete with each other, which one will sing more melodic songs

Only when you find yourself near the riverbed of Limnitis, will you be able to understand and "touch" the term "beautiful riverside environment."

Parallel to the east bank of the river, there is a dirt road that leads you deep into the forest. Walk a few hundred meters. The images you see will not only be unique but also beautiful. The pure, virgin forest that covers the entire length of the river, from its source, until the occupied village of Limnitis is a jewel for Cyprus and its people.

Discover it, live and enjoy it, but above all, respect it.

When following the path that starts at the bridge of the Setrachos river, at the valley of Marathasa, until the entrance of the Pyrgos village, NEVER EVER follow and nor enter dirt roads leading to the north, because they take you to the occupied by the Turks areas of Cyprus. If you enter the forest enter it ONLY heading South.

All along the route, no photograph should be taken of the guard rooms, whether they are manned or not. It is an area with a strong military presence.
