The Holy Church of Agia Aikaterini in Klavdia has a history that is well buried in time. This church is built in a byzantine style in the 14th century and is a single aisled arched church.
During the Ottoman period, when the Christian settlers of the village moved to others for more safety, the church had been transformed into a mosque. A room was added to the north part of it, where the Muslim believers left their shoes.
As a church it was fully frescoed with figures of Saints that date even earlier than the 14th century. Of course the Muslims, at their attempt to change the religious orientation of the place, covered them with plaster, and they have only been discovered recently.
During the works of the Church’s recovery, many clues were discovered that witness the Christian character of the place. A lot of evidence such as the ancient Gospel made from papyrus and leather, as well as frescoes of Saints were found in crypts.
The Church today is closed and officially it is considered as a mosque.
