Villages in Cyprus - Maroni, Larnaca

Added on: by

An old folk saying says “ the place makes a person and the person makes a place”. This is proven to be right when you visit and walk along the village of Maroni in Larnaca.

It is a village with more than 500 residents, Cypriots and foreigners. A big majority of them deal mainly with agriculture. Huge areas of land with low greenhouses, cover thousands of hectares with early vegetables, while open crops cover the same amount of land.

No matter from which point you enter the village, you will realise right away that you have entered an area where its residents care about it. They love and take care of it. The “old” village, built on the peaks of two hills, dominates the whole area with a view without obstacles until the beaches and the sea.

Most of the houses, are old mansions with yards and balconies. The are renovated following the same architecture, using the stones from the area, thus leaving narrow paved streets between them, “make you” take pictures of them.

The new constructing areas are built on a local plan, that is based on the division of single plots, something that encourages the creation of more green than concrete, something which will be noticed by a visitor if he observes the village from its south entrance.

The old bridge that gave access to the residents’ belongings that are found southwest of the Maroni river, is still there and it is protected. It is in a very beautiful landscape with high cypresses on the northwest and in huge groves on the southeast with its double arches, and it takes us back in time. Unfortunately some unconscious person fouled the beautiful landscape with his garbage, going against the law and away from the views of the residents of the village.

A picnic area on the left side of the road going towards the beach offers the basics to the visitors. There are grills for cooking, as well as sheltered tables and benches. There is a play place for children to play with safety. A double tap provides water for all use. There are sanitaries and facilities for our fellow humans who have to move with the help of wheelchairs.

There are many versions concerning the name of the village. The most popular one says that the village got the name “Maroni” from the Saint of Orthodoxy, Maronas. The main church of the village is dedicated to Agios Georgios and is found built in the centre of the traditional paved place in the village.

Maroni is a wonderful destination. If you want to see the traditional architecture of the lowlands of Cyprus from close, you should visit Maroni. If you want to know who the early vegetables are produced, you should go to Maroni. If you like romantic walks among narrow and picturesque streets, then Maroni is the village that will give this to you.

The rich history of the place that is lost in the start of the late bronze age, will give you many hours of observation of the houses that were constructed over thousands of years, and there are remains of them in many locations.

The shore with its beaches and fish taverns, is only two kilometres away from the centre of the village. Two kilometres that take you through a green landscape to the infinite blue of the sea.

Maroni is found built 35 kilometres southwest of the town of Larnaca, between the villages of Psematismenos and Zygi. Discover it.
