The Holy Monastery of Panagia Amasgous is the name of the female Monastery dedicated to Our Lady and it is found 1 to 1,5 kilometres southwest of the village of Monagri, in the district of Limassol.
As strange as the name of the Monastery may sound to you, even though it is unique for Cyprus, equally strange is the architecture in its buildings. It is a huge construction, over the riverbed of Kourris, stone built and it does not “match” with the environment in which it has been built at all.
It is found on a small widening of the hill’s slope and as it dominates over the river’s valley, the visitor can see it from far away as it stands out due to its volume.
At a small distance from the Monastery, there is Holy Water. A small Church is found built above the spot where the Holy Water gushes out from. Before you go there, ask at the Monastery, since there are doors and some of them have locks.
The Church of the Monastery is open all day long and it is a beautiful construction with a lot of architectural interest. It is built with huge rocks coming from the area of the Monastery from the foundations until a certain point. From that point until the roof, it is built out of cut stone, also from the area.
It is a single aisled Basilica that has a gabled, vaulted roof.
