On the peak of a hill that dominates the small island of “Geronisos”, where the village of Paphos, Pegeia is found, there is a Holy Church dedicated to Agios Georgios. On the slopes of the hill there are carved graves, that make up the necropolis of an ancient Greek Roman settlement. The small island Geronisos “hosted” the aisle dedicated to God Apollon.
The church of Agios Georgios is the latest Church of the five that have been built in the area. It is a Byzantine church, it is cruciform and it has a dome. It is built of stone and on both western corners it has belfries, one on each corner. The southern entrance forms an arch, that is also covered by a pointed arch. The same motive is repeated such on the west as on the north entrance. The roof is covered with tiles. The narthex forms a pentagon semicircle, in a place where nothing prevents you from seeing many kilometres ahead.
At a distance smaller than 50 metres from the Church, there is another smaller one, built in the 13th century, and it is a small, single aisled, arched basilica, dedicated to Agios Georgios.
The Holy Church of Agios Georgios of Pegeia, is one of the most important pilgrims for the Christians of the island, and foreigners, since many believers from other doctrines and religions visit it daily, and it is a common secret that many Ottoman settlers of the island go to the churches of Agios Georgios.
