In the Lara and Toxeftra regions, located at Cape of Akamas there are dozens of small or large bays that create fantastic sandy beaches. Some of these are ideal places for nesting the eggs of the endangered Mediterranean green turtles but also the Karreta-Karreta species, also in danger of extinction.
One of these beaches is in the "entrance" of Akamas between the Cape of Drepano and the southern bay of Lara beach, north of the outfall of River Avga, which at just 700 meters east forms the beautiful geomorphological phenomenon called "Farangi tou Avaka”.
This beach consists of fine, "golden" sand and has a maximum width of 35 meters, this is the reason that Mediterranean tortoises "choose" it to lay their eggs.
The coastline is covered by sandy rocks on which you can see strange geological forms such as small ravines and caves.
The beach of the turtles as it is called by the locals, is protected by strict and immediately applied laws, therefore if you are planning to use it, aplly the following.
It is forbidden to :
- Put umbrellas, sunbeds, tents and camping cars.
- Stay at the beach or the coastal area during the night, beginning an hour before the sun sets.
- Drive any vehicle of the beaches.
