Beaches in Cyprus - Santa Barbara beach, Agios Tychonas, Limassol

Added on: by

“Santa Barbara” beach is found close to the archaeological site of Amathus, a hundred metres east of the small church dedicated to Agia Varvara and it belongs to the administrative periphery of Agios Tychonas, Limassol.

It is a natural beach since it does not have breakwaters and it is not formed by them. At all its length, which is not very big, there are continuous changes between sandy and rocky beach.

It has a blue flag, this was the case for the summer period in 2015, and it is very well organised. There is everything to help you spend your holidays with comfort and safety.

Stores provide you with the means for many water sports, but also for your stay on the beach. Umbrellas and beds, from early in the morning in convenient locations waiting for you. However, during the summer months it is difficult or impossible to find an empty place. There are thousands of swimmers and vacationers who crowd it from early in the morning until late at night.

“Santa Barbara” beach is a narrow strip of land which at its best only reaches 25 metres of width, between the sea and a coast with a difference of 4-5 metres in altitude. On this coast, you can spend infinite hours under the shade of the umbrellas, in transformed areas with green and flowers.

The lifeguards are vigilant protectors of bathers continuously watching the movements of the people in sea. "It is better to prevent an incident before it occurs than to let it happen and then intervene," says one of the young people who is part of the lifeguard staff.

The waters of the beach are very clean. The sea, almost never "lifts" dangerous waves. You need some attention with children because the water gets deep after a few dozen meters, so do not leave them unattended when they are in it.

The main problem of the beach, if that can be one, is overcrowding, especially on holidays and Sundays. If this is inconvenient for you, then choose another beach for those days, and for those who like to be in crowded areas make sure you are at the beach from early in the morning. Otherwise you will have to walk 1-1.5 kilometres to find parking, or you simply will not find an empty spot on the beach.

The beach of Agia Varvara is under the direct administration of the Community Board of Agios Tychonas, which means low and stable prices in all services (some of them are free), for all guests without discrimination to both locals and foreigners, and thus explains the love of holidaymakers and their insistence to visit it.
