When you want to describe a place such as Lefkara, it is difficult to decide where to start from and it is even more difficult to pick the right words.
Lefkara is “perched” on the east side of the mountain that hosts the “Kionia” peaks, built on the southwest edge of the deep valley formed by the Sirkatis river, and it is probably the most beautiful village of Cyprus.
Each house is built with stone, that is extracted from the Lefkara region, as well as the narrow streets that lead you to beautiful yards.
The architecture of the houses is unique, with high balconies that in some cases are tangent to the opposite ones.
Each street is decorated with thousands of flower pots filled with flowers and plants, thus creating an environment that by no means reminds you of the cold ochre of stone.
In each yard you will see women of all ages, embroidering the traditional “Lefkaritiko”. It is a specific kind of embroidering that is only found in Lefkara. The technique of embroidery of this type is special because when it is finished you cannot distinguish which side is the one you can use since both sides of it are perfect.
In Lefkara, in every neighbourhood you will find a church. The Church of Timios Stavros (The Holy Cross), is found in the centre of the village, and all around it there are other churches such as the one of Agios Ksorinos, Ai-Georgi, Panagia Tis Omorfias (Our Lady of Beauty), Agia Marina, Agios Georgios, Agios Mamas, Agios Andronikos, the Church of Agioi Anargyroi and the Church of Agioi Anargyroi and Agios Neophytos, are a few of the churches that are there.
Some of these chapels are from the Byzantine period, and with time they have incorporated in the houses. The chapel dedicated to Agios Mamas is incorporated in a hotel.
The visitor that will decide to travel to the mountainous part of Larnaca and visit Lefkara, has a lot to gain. The visitor can walk along paved streets and study the architecture of the houses and the churches for many hours. A little attention is required concerning where you will dine. Before you order, ask for the pricelist and even more, ask about the quantity of food.
