In June 2007, when a fire broke out due to a human mistake, a few metres north of the dam of Trimiklini or Saittas, burnt the most beautiful forests of Troodos. They occupied an area of land of many kilometres, and the fire services of Cyprus, along with the forest services and the participation of hundreds of volunteers of the hunting services, they succeeded to limit the fire in the narrow strip where the riverbed of Kourris was found. The area burned, is currently in the process of recovery. Thousands of young pines, under the "protection" of "regenerated" golden oak bushes, began to make the slopes of the ravine green.
The sacrifices of these people saved the beautiful pine forest of Saittas, for us to be able to enjoy it. This forest has trees in it whose age corresponds to their great height. The density of the trees creates unique forest ecosystems.
In this magnificent landscape, the Department of Forests succeeded to “build” a picnic area without subtracting a single tree or bush. The picnic area of Mesa Potamos has the capacity to receive 700 people.
The picnic tables are scattered on the “mild” slope, far away the one from the other, thus offering the isolation and the quietness desired by the excursionists. Some of these have signs saying that they can host wheelchairs.
Mesa potamos flows all year round and “divides” the picnic area into two. The water flows wildly into the bed that is covered in gabbro rocks, giving the river beautiful features with their colours. If you follow the descending flow of the river, you will see unique landscapes. Many small waterfalls will “prepare” you for the big waterfall of Mesa Potamos.
The area is discretely surveilled by the Department of Forests. The forest in which the picnic area is found, is one of the most beautiful forests that exist in Cyprus and it should remain as such.
