In the “heart” of the wider part of Nicosia, the “Theoktistos” (built by God) garden belonging to the monastery of Agios Prokopios or as it is better known “Metochi Kykkou” is found. The garden is part of the surrounding space of the Monastery that was initially a large olive grove.
In 1890 Father Gerasimos is named abbot of the Monastery. He was a real visualiser that transformed the monastery to the richest Metochi (part) of Kykkos in a few years. He bought great areas of land that bordered with the monastery and transformed them into fields. The whole area turned into a big garden. People worked there in difficult times. The Monastery helped people in this way.
The Monastery’s needs for charity have augmented so much inside as well as outside the country, that they lead the current abbot to construct on the biggest part of this fortune. A big part east of the Monastery was kept (this is the area where the State exhibition of Cyprus took place for years) and he created a “diamond” for the Monastery and for the whole of Cyprus in it. He created a garden that, even though it is found among huge avenues, the visitor does not hear any noise. The only noises that can be heard are those of the thousands birds that are hosted there.
I do not want to say much about it because I am afraid of making it seem less important than it really is, and this is the reason why I encourage you to go visit it and to walk along its corridors, among the orange trees, the mandarin trees, the olive trees and other fruit and ornamental trees.
