The monastery of Agios Prokopios, that is dependent of the Holy Monastery of Kykkos, is found built in Engomi, in the Nicosia district, only a few metres away from the Russian and the USA embassies.
The monastery has a long history that dates back in the Othoman period. Back in the years that honour it for its participation in the Cypriot people’s battles for freedom and independance.
In the difficult years imposed by the occupiers, the monastery was the support to all of the people of Cyprus. The were attending its yard daily in thousands, bringing offerings with them loaded on oxcarts, donkeys and anything else they had. Pilgrims came from all the districts, but mostly from the Mesaoria plains, with only request to Our Lady to prevent or to stop droughts.
The Metochi was fortunate enough to have worthy abbots that love the Monastery and the people. Going through many difficulties, they managed to create olive groves and orange tree orchards in the monastery’s perimeter. They handed them over to villagers to take care of them and paid them a small amount of money. In this way the helped the people from starving.
With the expansion of Nicosia out of the walls from the northeast, from the northwest of Engomi and from the south of Strovolos, as well as the rapidly increasing needs for shelter, the Monastery was lead to build on the areas of the olive groves and the fields.
The great charity work of the Monastery, that also crosses the borders of Cyprus, honours all of its Hierarchs, especially the current one, Nikiforos, who goes along the paths of the abbot Gerasimos.
