In Cyprus dams have been constructed in nearly all the rivers, since low rainfall is a very regular phenomenon, thus reducing the problem. There are many big dams and dozens of smaller ones. One of the biggest dams is the one in Lefkara.
It is made of earth and has a height of 74 metres. Its basin covers 65 hectares and can store 13,850,000 cubic metres of water. It is handled by the Water Development Department.
It was constructed in 1973, mainly aiming to provide the city of Ammochostos with potable water. After 1974 and the oppressing needs that were created for irrigation, it was also integrated in different irrigation plans, as well as the water supplies of the Ammochostos district, the city of Larnaca and many other villages of the same district. The dam is found on the right side of the road from Kornos towards Lefkara. Follow the dirt road that you will find on your right, a few metres before descending to the riverbed level, there is a sign. The road is steep and follows the river up until the dam. If you plan to visit it, be careful from the rocks in the road since there may be landslides.
The journey on the dirt road does not last longer than 5-6 minutes and there are a few points where you can park and admire the earthen dam as well as the point of overflow that really offer a magnificent view.
While getting closer to the dam’s square you will realise that you are in an extraordinary place. The dam is built among many mountain peaks, whose slopes are so steep, as if they were vertical, that you may be frightened by their size.
The water follows the gorges formed by the mountains, creating images that we rarely have the occasion to see. The Kionia peak, “dominates” the dam from above.
Fishing is ONLY allowed with special permission from the Water Development Department. Otherwise, the fine is so large that it functions as a repellant.
You can cycle, walk on the different paths and spend some family time in the dam area, as a reward for your try to escape from the concrete of the towns.
The Lefkara dam, apart from being used for irrigation and water supply, is one of the most beautiful destinations in Cyprus all year round.
