Villages in Cyprus - Arakapas, Great Commandarie, Limassol

The village of Arakapas is a village of the Limassol district and it is found west of the village of Eptagonia. It is built on the shores of the Amathos river, in a valley that is surrounded by high mountain peaks.

The mild climate as well as the land’s fertility help the production of the best and most sweet mandarins on the island. They gave it the name of the village, the mandarin of Arakapas (mandarini Arakapa).

At ancient times, Arakapas was on of the many wine producing villages of Limassol. Unfortunately, just like in other villages, the vines have been derooted after a relative decision of the government of cyprus. Fields with mandarin tree took their place but the great majority of the land was transformed to a bushy area and it is left uncultivated.

The village has about 300 permanent settlers and most of them work in Limassol and in the meanwhile they cultivate their fields with mandarin and olive trees.

From the very first moment that the visitor will enter the village, he will realise the beauty of the place. Upon descending for the village from the area of Eptagonia, after you leave the peripheral elementary school “Iamatikis” behind you, you will see the village spread under your feet.

In the valley of the river Amathos, among the high mountain peaks planted with pine trees, Arakapas will seduce you. The two churches of Panagia Iamatikis will “welcome” you once you pass the bridge of Amathos. From there on, huge platanus trees will “accompany” you until the big church.

Alongh the length of the north shore of the river, fig trees giving sweet fruit will “treat” you.

On the big square where the church of the Virgin is found, you will also find the community park, where you will be able to spend some calm and carefree time with your children on its grass.

On the same square, you will find the ancient tap of Arakapas and the monument in the honour of the heroes of the community. There are also football and basketball courts. Walk along its roads and narrow streets, talk to the settlers; they are so friendly and welcome.

Do not neglect to visit the Holy water of Panagia Iamatikis. You will find it 2500 metres north of the two churches. It wells out from a rock, on the same level as the riverbed of a Amathos confluents

Finally, try the mandarins of Arakapas. They will be the sweetest version of mandarins you have ever tried.
