Villages in Cyprus - Dierona, Limassol

Added on: by

Dierona is a village belonging to the semi mountain areas of Limassol and it is built 20 kilometres northeast of the town, on the peak of a hill 460 metres high. It has a dominating position in the area since it is found on the highest point of the valley formed by the river Amathos.

It has 250 permanent residents, who descend to the city of Limassol for work. However this does not stop them from taking care of and conserving large areas of orchards containing mainly citrus trees. The icon in the forecourt of the church of the village dedicated to Archangel Michael is remarkable.

The houses are built the one next to the other with very narrow uphill roads, due to the closeness of the constructible area and to the land’s slope. On the balconies, multicoloured geraniums colour the village.

On the west side of the church, you will find the old tap from where the settlers used to provide their households with water. It is now useless since its water is inappropriate. A small park with a few attractions for children, some grass and a large millstone, decorate the entrance of the old Elementary school of Dierona.

On the south side of the school there is a monument in the honour of the student Andreas Georgiou, hero of EOKA, watching the building where he first learned how to read and write. At the age of 16, before he had the time to realise his dreams, the English bullets took his life away from him. There are two flags and a garden with multi colored roses keeping him company. The journey to Dierona, no matter where you chose to come from, will offer you many emotions. At each stream, you will see springs welling out of the mountain’s land. The view of the “chaos” of the valley of Amathos, with its steepness and the greatness of its depth, cuts your breath.

The mountain peak where Dierona is found, has a peculiarity. From the dam of Yermasoyia, until the entrance to the village itself, you will be seeing a “strange” phenomenon. The pine trees are very few and in addition to that, they are found in the depth of each stream.  In the rest of the landscape, there are forests of wild olive trees and low bushy trees. This “mosaic” cannot be found in other areas of Cyprus, and at points where you will find similar ones, they do not have the same dimensions as this one.

If you are coming from Yermasoyia, or from Arakapas, the roads are very good and comfortable, giving the visitor a safe journey.
