Lakes in Cyprus - Lake at the mine of Sia, Sia, Nicosia

On the west side of the village of Sia, on the road going from Sia to Mathiatis, humans dug into the ground to find copper and pyrite for many years. The small trains went downhill into the galleries, they were filled with soil and went up to the earth’s surface with difficulty to transfer their precious loads to the place where the ores were washed.

Upon digging into the ground, they created a huge amphitheatrical basin. As the years went by, it grew bigger and bigger, until the point where the pickaxe stopped hitting the copper. The mine was abandoned by its owner who was a Greek mining company.

It left a lunar formed landscape which has never been restored. Not even a single tree was planted upon their departure. A gallery still remains open watching the sky.

The creator nature, took over to restore everything the human greed destroyed. It filled the huge basin with water. Nature gave this basin all the colours of the earth, so as to “match” with the landscape. It transformed it into a beautiful lake.

Attention: Do not approach the shores of the lake. Its soil is mainly made up of the leftovers of the mine and may subside easily.
