The riverbed of Gialias is not offered morphologically for big dams. Thus, from the area north of the Lythrodontas village until the bridge of the intercity motorway from Nicosia to Limassol, in Nisou, there are six small dams. One of these is between the village of Kotsiatis and Nisou. It is a very small dam whose overflow does not exceed 3 metres though it creates a small, shallow but very beautiful lake.
The purpose of creation of the dam is the enrichment of the underground waters. The choice of this location took place due to the fact that the area has a great absorption capacities geologically, but it is also the beginning of a huge underground aquifer.
When the small dam is filled, the river continues its journey for another 200 metres and passing under the motorway, it reaches a point where it disappears. It gets lost in the depths of the earth, thus it is rare that you see it cross the next bridge of the old motorway that passes through the village of Niso, and this only happens when the water is too much in the river.
Where is the dam found? You will find it on the road from Nisou to Kotsiatis, just after the flower shops Solomou, you take the turn on the left and you will face the dam.
It is not offered for any other purposes apart from the ones of its creation, which are the enrichment of the underground aquifer. Moreover the duration of “life” of the dam is the same as the duration of the flow of water into the Gialias river. When the river stops flowing, the small lake of the dam disappears after a few weeks.
If you pass by the area, take some time to visit it. It is a good destination for the dam lovers, of course.
