Agios Constantinos

Villages in Cyprus - Agios Konstantinos, Great Commandarie, Limassol

Added on: by

The village of Agios Konstantinos in the province of Limassol, is built on a hillside slope of the Papoutsa mountain which is included within the valley of the Amathos river.

Although the story goes far back in time, the village consists of houses built only in the second half of the 20th century. This is because the residents chose to move from the initial position where the village was located and to go to lower regions, where circulation would easier. So if you visit Agios Constantinos, you will see very few houses with traditional architecture.

When going to Agios Constantinos, through the village of "Kalo Chorio", as you begin to go up the slope of Papoutsa, the first thing that will impress you is how many colors were used by the Creator to dress the environment.

Once you reach the top, the view will amaze you.

South you will see huge vineyards, transformed into terraces, with their characteristic green color spreading out as far as your eyes can reach.

North you will see the slope of Papoutsa spreading like an amphitheater beneath your legs and at its northern part, Agios Constantinos "nestling" in green.

Agios Constantinos has offered a lot to the Cypriot people and has as a lot more to offer to each visitor.

In the recent past of the island and during the years of the national liberation struggle of EOKA, many residents actively participated in it. Names like Athena Lambrou, Rotariani Lambrou, Evangelos Lambrou, Hermione Matsoudia and others, adorn the records of fighters.

In Agios Constantinos there are two very old churches and one built very recently. The old one is dedicated to Saints Constantinos and Eleni and the other one to Panagia Eleousa. The new church is also dedicated to Saints Constantinos and Eleni.

Just a few meters away from the new church, there is a monument dedicated to the Hero of the community and of Cyprus, Evangelos Moullotos, who fell in battle with the Turkish invaders. The majesty of the monument is worthy of the honour to be paid to the Hero.

A short distance from this monument and just before the old church, in a small square, there is another monument. A statue in the form of EOKA hero Yiannakis Christoforou, relying on a symbolic pillar of granite, reminding us all of our debt to the Motherland.

In the area of the first monument, near a large water tank, which was formerly part of the irrigation system of the village, you will find the facilities of the old olive mill. It is an amazing, beautiful construction of a bygone era. Efforts are being made to transform it to a museum.

While walking through the streets of the village, you will be raised up to the point where the church stands. Nobody knows when it was built. If you go even higher, you will see some restored houses, so you can understand the architecture that the old village had.

At the bottom of the valley, there is a winery. There, the grapes from the vineyards of the village, after a mysterious procedure, are processed and converted into the sweetest wine on the planet. Commandaria, the sacramental wine of Cyprus, takes "flesh and bones".

In Agios Constantinos, the production of Commandaria, dates back long before it was included in the "Great Commandaria" area which was under the command of the Knights Templar.
