Aplostra beach - Lady's Mile

Beaches in Cyprus - Aplostra beach, Lady's Mile, Limassol

Added on: by

On the west part of Limassol, the most famous beach of Cyprus is found, Aplostra. By habit, old citizens of Limassol called it, and a great number of them still continues today, to call it “Lady’s Mile”. They called it as such because during the years when Cyprus was a British colony, the English Brass hat, used to train his horse on a distance of a mile, on the sand of the beach that had a total length of 8 kilometres.  From the horse’s name, that was “Lady”, the Aplostra beach became “Lady’s Mile”.

Up until 15-20 years ago, Aplostra was the only beach where the whole family could enjoy the sea with security. The rest of the coastline, from the New port, until Amathounta, and from there until the “Saint Raphael” marina, it was inaccessible for most of the citizens of Limassol.

After 1980, something incredible happened in Limassol. Arabs from neighbouring countries “discovered” Cyprus and Limassol. Great areas of land with barren hills were passed on to their hands and the luxurious houses they built, filled the east areas of the city. Prosperity started to influence the whole coastline.

Hotels were built very quickly. Each hotel appropriated a part of the beach. They cut access with boulders so that only their own customers could enjoy the beach.

Aplostra, however, was the only beach that could not be appropriated by any hotel. It became pure and virgin so that all the residents of Limassol could benefit from it. Over the last 15 years, mayors of the municipalities of Limassol, those elected were people with a vision for their city. With a common slogan "we turn the face of our city to the sea" a struggle for landscaping and restoration of the entire coastal front begun, resulting to Limassol being proud of dozens of sandy beaches today. Beaches that all residents and thousands of visitors, can use and enjoy easily and in total safety.

No matter how many beaches Limassol has today, Aplostra beach will forever remain as one of the priorities of every Cypriot who loves the sea and most of all Limassol.

The beach starts west of New Port and extends for approximately 8 kilometres. At reasonable distances, there are cafes and restaurants that offer visitors and bathers all the required services.

In the summer, lifeguard services are provided, as well as watersports services. A small part of the beach contains pebbles, and the rest is sandy. Parking spaces are available for thousands of cars and the most important, they cannot reach the beach.

What makes the beach Aplostra unique, is that apart from its shallow waters without currents whirlpools, the good services it provides you with and its sandy beaches, is that it is found between the sea dn the big salt lake of Limassol. If you combine all of the above, along with the great, in terms of land, eucalyptus forest that is found north of the lake, with the ships that depart and arrive and if you also add the airplanes that land in Akrotiri to the image, then you have a beach that offers everything to you.
