One of the oldest dams of Cyprus is that of the Municipality of Polemidia in Limassol. It is built on the direction of the Garillis river and has the storage capacity of 3440000 cubic metres of water. It is a dirt dam with a spillway reaching the height of 45 metres.
A few years ago the dam was under a control programme for water pollution. The area where it is found is consisted of mild and low hills that are totally covered by low plantations and bushes that “bond” well with the lake that is formed by the dam.
On the east shore of the lake, there are facilities and infrastructures that witness seasports that are taking place in the area, despite the warning sign that “says” the opposite. It is better that those willing to do some seasports, to ask for more information before doing so from the municipality services.
At this time of year, that the water levels are low, the visitor may walk until the spillway and see the lake from a different angle. They will see the beauty of the lake, as the grey-green hills are reflected in its waters.
They will be able to descend with the help of a wooden staircase and then a concrete one, until the point where small boats embark and disembark boating lovers. The dam of Polemidia, the “old man” of the dams of Cyprus (year of accomplishment, 1965) still fascinates its visitors with its beauty and is a destination for the whole family.
