Rivers in Cyprus - Kseropotamos, Larnaca

Added on: by

“Kseropotamos” (dried up river) is replenished from the area west of the Stavrovouni Monastery and exudes in the sea a few metres away from the “yacht shelter” in Alaminos.

It is found on the route passing through the Anafotida and Kofinou villages. It continues by dividing the Alamino village into two and after it crosses a valley with fields and other plantations where people made sure to entrench the free flow of water by blocking, it gets lost in the sea.

“Kseropotamos” in Alaminos, Larnaca has created a very fertile valley of a few kilometres. There are big areas of orange and olive trees that transform the area into a green paradise.

The valley’s aquifers were very efficient a few years ago, something that favored the creation of hundreds of greenhouses for grocery production. The few settlers of Alaminos prospered by working in their fields.

Unfortunately rough years followed, and rainfall was scarce. The river took years to “bear” water. The underground waters were drained. The greenhouses were left and destroyed. The few people that remained to cultivate the ground, have great expenses as far as it concerns water drilling, in order to ensure that their fields and plantations to have the appropriate amount of water in order not to dry out.

This year began in an encouraging way for Kseropotamos in terms of water. A very strong water fall accompanied by hail made the riverbed overflow in the triangle of Stavrovouni, Kofinou and Agglisides.

Dozens of Alaminos’ settlers, including elementary school pupils with their teachers ran to the two bridges of the river to admire the view.
